What I'm wondering about is whether one can simply 'get by' without the
OS X 10.4 Daylight Savings Time update.

The Apple download page specifically says it requires 10.4.8. I'm at
10.4.3 with a) no special desire to update to 10.4.8 now (preferring to
wait and see if there will be a final 10.4.9 update), and b) on a dialup
connection at about 24K... which makes downloading the 10.4.8 Combo
Update next to impossible. I have no local friends who have Macs with
high speed connections.

Apple used to offer CDs (for a price) for incremental updates... now they
don't seem to offer the option.

Answers, anyone ?

Thanks.

Peter B.
