What I'm wondering about is whether one can simply 'get by' without
the
OS X 10.4 Daylight Savings Time update.
All the update does is change when the Date/Time pref panel auto
adjusts for daylight savings.
If you don't want to use it, the fix is simple. Turn off the Set Date
& Time Automatically (ie: don't use a time server) and then manually
set the Time to the correct time. You can resume using a time server
after the "old" daylight savings time change date passes.
I'm constantly laughing at all the people freaking out over this with
their computers. They seem to forget that once upon a time, we all
had to manually adjust our computer clocks... hell, my first
computers didn't HAVE clocks, and once date/time support was added to
the OS, you had to manually set the date and time every time you
booted the computer!
Manual adjusting of computer clocks still works. This whole time
change thing isn't a "problem" for computers. It is a headache for
admins as they may have to go and manually change a number of
machines. It can be a problem for things with embedded, non
changeable clocks, but those are few and far between. Most embedded
clock systems either don't pay attention to DST in the first place
(think about most VCRs, watches, and similar devices), so you would
have to change it when the time comes anyway... OR if they do pay
attention to DST, you can just manually change the clock now, and
then again in a few weeks.
The only places this is really a problem are places that are
extremely time sensitive AND require these manual changes to correct
for them. Or, places where the people manning the clock are too
stupid, lazy, or incompetent to get it right (I'm already thankful I
no longer have Cablevision TV service, as I can bet they are going to
screw this up and cause all their cable boxes to be off an hour,
likely for several days... that means their DVR will screw up all
recordings until they get their act together).
b) on a dialup
connection at about 24K... which makes downloading the 10.4.8 Combo
Update next to impossible. I have no local friends who have Macs with
high speed connections.
If it is just the download time you have an issue with, I'd be happy
to download the update, burn it to CD and mail it to you. Just let me
know where to send it (off list obviously). If there are other
updates you want at the same time, let me know and I can include
those on the CD as well. (links to download them would be helpful so
I don't have to go searching to find whatever it is you are referring
to).
a) no special desire to update to 10.4.8 now (preferring to
wait and see if there will be a final 10.4.9 update),
This will probably be out shortly, so you probably are better off
waiting until it is released. It will also almost certainly be the
last release (other than security fixes) before 10.5.
If you want to wait for 10.4.9, my offer still stands to burn it to
CD for you once it comes out.
