Odd that it didn't pick up 587 because I was able to telnet to it on
that port.
SMTP is port 25 not 587...
Is this relevant ?
SMTP is port 25, but port 587 is used as the "submission" port,
basically it is an alternate SMTP port designed for inbound relay
traffic and used to get around port 25 blocks. Not all mail providers
support it but it is becoming more and more common.
