Ok, then OS X can solve this problem for you, more below

My problem is twofold. HE.NET does not reuire authentication. I could use another ISP, such as idiom, which does. Is that what you are hinting at? But it would not be the SMTP server for the email accounts, as I have 20+
accounts, on multiple ISP/domains.

That wouldn't help, for exactly the reason you suspect, the user/ password would be wrong for the ISP.

What you need is to change back to a regular version of Emailer, and then let OS X redirect your outbound port 25 traffic to port 587. That would let you use the HE.net server for all your accounts (assuming they aren't doing some other kind of authenticating).

To do this in OS X, use IPFW to forward outbound traffic on port 25 to port 587. You can either do this from a command line, or via some utility like Flying Buttress (was Brickhouse).
