Actually, the patch has nothing at all to do with Wi-Fi connections.
All the patch does is allows you to do SMTP Authentication (something
nearly all ISPs now require if you are sending from off their
network), and the Port 587 version changes things from going over the
standard port 25, to the alternate Submission port 587. This port
change is needed only if the ISP you are connecting to (in your
example either the free wi-fi, your your BF's internet connection)
blocks port 25 access to mail servers that are not their own.
However, even if that is true, your mail provider (likely your home
ISP), must also support accepting mail via port 587 (something that
is growing, but is not yet really wide spread).
In the case of free wi-fi, it is very likely that port 25 will be
blocked because it will help keep people from using the connection
for spamming. In the case of your BF's network, port 25 may or my not
be blocked it all will depend on who is ISP is (cable providers often
block port 25, as do some DSL providers, I do not believe the
practice is very wide spread with dialup, but I could be wrong).
