I went to the Connection Doctor (I apologize for not finding it earlier) and it pointed out that I needed to re-enter some info that for some strange reason Mail had changed on its own. (Like that I required a password to access by server!)
What is with that? Now I guess the only problem that remains is how to wipe that memory of the old mac.com account clean from Mail's memory.
