I must also lament about missing CE. I have been using Apple Mail for some years now and it is not too bad but I miss CE.
Why didn 't Apple fix or update the CE?

My understanding was, Emailer got killed off along with all the other Claris products when Claris was closed down. They kept Claris Works, renamed it AppleWorks, as they needed some kind of general productivity apps to offer cheap (now they have iWork). And Filemaker was moved to its own company as it was really the only profitable product in the Claris line.

I'm sure it didn't help Emailer any that at the same time Apple was making a large deal with MS and MS wanted Outlook Express to be pushed on the Mac, so as much as Apple people deny it, I'm sure that was seen as a bonus in the move. Also OS X was nearing and Mail.app was the NeXT mail client. Jobs being Jobs I'm sure wanted to see nothing act as competition to Mail.app being "the" mail client offered by Apple for OS X.
