Just to remind folks, I used the following upgrade path way back when.

OS 7, 8, 9  Claris Emailer -> Outlook Express ->
  OS X Entourage 2004 -> Entourage 2008

If you are still running OS 9 (or Classic), and you are still running Claris Emailer, I would encourage you to consider upgrading to Outlook Express. It will help you navigate those issues such as setting ports, having multiple
SMTP accounts for different situations, etc.

Importing Claris Emailer database into Outlook Express was easy. Importing
Outlook Express database in Entourage 2004 was easy.

Roger, surprised that I am still reading posts from the Claris Emailer list
all these years later!+

Well, I'm still reading emails arriving to my Emailer box ..... while I adjust to Mail. (emails arrive into *both*, if I select Mail - mail before Emailer - mail. (If I select Emailer - mail first, then the mail is automatically deleted from the
ISP mail-server)

While not in love with Mail.... it may do in the long run.... and I have archived old Emailer- received mail on Mail (up to a point... probably need to do it again)

The main advantages I found (for me) in Emailer were three:

1. The ability to Change the *Subject* Title of a received mail, making it
             much more easily stored/identified.

2. The ability to have numerous separate storehouses for all mail to and/or from
             a particular party, group, or subject heading.

3. The ability to group addresses for mails sent under a particular heading, such as "Book Group" etc., where the same address might be found elsewhere
             in the overall address book.

I hope Roger will continue to read the posts on Emailer, and contribute, such as he just did. As a result of his last post, I am encouraged to look at Entourage.
