My research indicates that debian "stable" has an acceptable version of
gtk+.  this appears to include bdi4, according to
    http://bdi4emc.ourproject.org/Package_list.html

gtk+ 2.4 or newer is not difficult to compile; I've personally done this
on redhat 9, which is a 2003 OS.  I did this with the help of some
scripts, which I've put online:
    http://emergent.unpy.net/files/sandbox/build.sh
    http://emergent.unpy.net/files/sandbox/env.sh
(these scripts actually build gimp 2.2.7, which also requires gtk+ 2.4)
