The extraneous spaces were only in the email, I have to retype it since the
computer I am emailing from is separate from the development computer. I
tried all sorts of combinations of referencing the BIT file. Among them was
to copy SVST8_4.BIT into the "bin" folder and then reference it as
firmware=bin/SVST8_4.BIT. Every way I do it I get the exact same error:
hm2_5i20: Unknown parameter "num_stepgens"

There are extraneous spaces there, and unless you specifically added the
symlink it probably doesnt know what to do with "firmware=bin/...".
It should be something like this:
loadrt hm2_5i20 config="firmware=SVST8_4.BIT num_stepgens=2"
