Thanks -- I looked and found commit 75062ed which looks like what you
mean (to see it: git log -1 -p 75062ed).  I applied it to 2.3.

Once I had found the change, and since it was all in a single commit, I
could easily apply the change to 2.3:
    git cherry-pick 75062ed

This is one of the features of git I was quite excited about, and so far
it seems to be living up to its promise.
