Everyone has a favorite. I'm fond of nedit.

Old-timers swear by Emacs, which I think of as the Swiss-Army knife that 
cuts you no matter which blade you open, but that's just me.

Vi/vim is available on most any Unix/Linux machine. It's been around for 
ever, is a thin shell over ed, and I've used it for so long on so many 
different machines  I  can't get the commands out of my head any more.

PS - I assumed you meant on Unix/Linux. There are ports of this programs 
to MS Windows but there are also others in that environment.
