Hi Andy,

I was so anxious to get a head start on your suggestion that I began
yesterday!

The commit where the problem begins is
8868436313c34eaf60a14f5c930f0f2035b9ee48.

After saying this was not a problem I introduced, I'm not so sure
anymore. The biggest hunk of the forward-ported patches that originated
with me changes rtapi/linux_common.h to compile with this commit, where
function prototypes for realtime motion messaging change. It's broken
out into linux_common.h.patch in the tarball linked below.

Here's a recipe to demonstrate the problem's non-existence in the
previous commit and the problem's existence in the following commit.
It's not well-tested, and it WILL FAIL if you just try to source it from
a shell. Otherwise it should be easy to follow and reproduce. Unpack
this into /tmp, probably, and look at the README:

http://www.zultron.com/static/2012/04/linuxcnc-bitmuster-bisect.tgz

I won't have much more time to work on this until next week, since I
have both family and an investor in town over the weekend. I'll be
excited to monitor any progress, though!

My greatest gratitude for everyone's help and encouragement. The sun is
indeed shining today. ;)

        John
