Well, maybe it is because I don't use software step generation and have 
no base thread,
but most of my LinuxCNC systems are quite responsive, although I do see 
things
slow down a little when the CNC program is running.  I attribute this 
mostly to
the 3D preview.  And, I do NOT use high-end hardware for CNC, mostly 1 GHz
CPUs with 256 - 512 Mb of memory.
