Ouch. It seems the rev B (512Mb) is however available on e-bay with short
delivery times so that would be one option.
Continuously having these production/delivery problems is not good news for
Pi-based projects. I hope they fix that.

Yes! These look similar(ish) to what I was thinking about. It seems a
proper enclosure will cost as much as the Pi, and a 7" touch-screen is
about 2-3x the cost of a Pi. So it is around 200 $/eur minimum for a Pi
with a touch-screen.
My plan will be to look at analog and digital IO over the SPI bus, and see
how that can be interfaced to HAL.
