Adding my $0.02… As a user of several Linuxcnc machines (and not having used any controller before - commercial or not) this has always annoyed me and everyone else who I’ve had to teach to use the machines. It is one of those things that catches you out no matter how much experience you have. Why isn’t the machine moving? Damn, I forgot to change tab back to manual mode after that tool change button I clicked that switched to MDI “for me”.
I am currently fighting with Axis and glade/python to solve EXACTLY this issue by essentially duplicating Axis functionality in a Glade panel so I can use python to programmatically switch back and forth from manual to MDI tab for the user. This is one of those things that currently has good reasons for it’s existence as it operates today, but REALLY should be changed for usability.
