Is there anything wrong with the odroid you were using that a bigger fan wouldn't cure? I find that the pi3b on my sheldon, which is upside down for easy hookup to the 7i90 but has a small video card fan under it, blowing on the heat sinks from 1/4" away, is virtually bulletproof. Make -j4's has yet to overheat and crash it. Its currently running a raspian stretch full+ that was built on that pi by RealtimePi, and lcnc loves the newfound lower latency, dropping from 70 u-secs to a very stable 28 u-secs. The lathe is running quieter by a noticeable amount. The only problem is finding the sata on the ssd<->usb2 adapter, so the ssd I'm building stuff on goes read-only to easily because the usb of the adapter is usb3. I have another ssd, 120GB that I'm going to exercise yet tonight if I can. But its adapter also has the blue usb3 connector. So that possibility of a read-only may exist due to the usb miss-matching. Its non destructive so far as the e2fsck on a reboot has fixed it. But now I'll try the other drive.
