Stored stress from the original cooling, plus the temp cycles from the
nearby coffee pot if it was in daily use. Eventually might make a
fatigue crack. Each heating and cooling cycle that does not get hot
enough to anneal the stress out of it, builds up a fraction of a % more
until it lets go.

I've heard of bolt rifle receivers doing that if hot loads have been used
for most of a century. But my Eddystone P17, on its 6th barrel and a
century old now, this time an SS 6.5 Creedmoor, but two 30-06's and 3
Ackley Improved's preceded it, is still going strong. Someday, though
since its fired at least 10,000 60 to 62 kpsi loads already, its always
in the back of you mind as the trigger finger gives its final twitch.
Designed for a little over 50 from the std mil spec load, but Ackleys
are generally accuracy happier at the higher pressure.
