I decided to split my changes into two pull request, and have created the first one now:
https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/pull/1613 - "Remove joint and axis internal data from shared mem" (There were some third-party changes mixed up into Dewey's rebase of my original commits, so I'll have to redo most of the work.
