Granite devices has a good description of dual feedback loops (and a
mention for linuxcnc). The inner velocity feedback loop is normally closed
on the drive and the outer position loop by Linuxcnc
https://granitedevices.com/wiki/Dual-loop_feedback_position_control

Ethercat is an industry standard from Beckhoff https://www.beckhoff.com/ that
allows slave devices to be daisy chained via ethernet cables and
coordinated by an ethercat master. There is a driver interface for linuxcnc
to the IgH Etherlabmaster master https://etherlab.org/en/ethercat/ that is
installed on your linuxcnc PC. Linuxcnc works in much the same way as if
the ethercat master was any other external device like mesa. Ethercat can
span a whole factory so the added complexity and cost may not be warranted
for a much smaller cnc machine.
