Sorry to raise an old chestnut in passing.... We should only provide an interface to the IgH software, nothing else. That software is Open Source. That is clear. The IgH software is actually stand alone on the PC, installed from its own package from their repo if you follow my instructions https://forum.linuxcnc.org/ethercat/45336-ethercat-installation-from-repositories-how-to-step-by-step <https://forum.linuxcnc.org/ethercat/45336-ethercat-installation-from-repositories-how-to-step-by-step> It would be up to the user to install the IgH package if he wanted to use ethercat devices, linuxcnc would just provide an interface to the igH package which the user may or may not install or use. That to me quarantines Beckhoff to IgH well away from linuxcnc.
Accessing different software packages by published API's is nothing new... IgH have made it much cleaner to do now they provide the repository.
