Subject: Recommendations for a portable spectrum analyzer?

Dear List,

I am looking to purchase (new or used) a good general purpose spectrum
analyzer, mostly for use with an EMCO sniffer loop set for locating
"hot"
boards, shields, and cables, panel joints which are leaking, etc. The
frequency range of interest is up to a few GHz (this is to assist with
EN
55011 emissions testing). I also want to get something that other
engineers
and techs don't shy away from. So, I don't need or want anything
incredibly
fancy, and I'm not trying to set up an open field site. Just reliable
and
straightforward to use.

Any brand name and model suggestions?

My thanks in advance.

MORTON DOWNEY JR. DIES: Morton Downey Jr., the confrontational '80s
talk-show host who paved the way for the likes of Jerry Springer, died of
lung cancer Monday at the age of 67, The Associated Press reports. Downey -
a chain smoker who would blow smoke into the faces of guests who rubbed him
the wrong way - lost a lung to cancer in 1996 and later became an
anti-smoking crusader.

DID SHE OR DIDN'T SHE?: In this week's scathing cover story, the National
Enquirer alleges that Three's Company alum Suzanne Somers secretly underwent
liposuction in a Beverly Hills clinic on Feb. 20. The tabloid article
includes photos of a supposedly post-surgery Somers - who's authored four
diet books and hawked countless ThighMaster gadgets - being escorted to her
car by a nurse. It also quotes sassy fitness guru Jack LaLanne as asking:
"So what happened to her system? It must not be working for her! This is the
extreme in hypocrisy. She's let down all her fans, admirers and customers."
Somers's publicist, Sandi Mendelson, would only tell TV Guide Online: "We're
really not going to make any comments. We don't want to spend any more
energy on this and dignify this."

CASE CLOSED: The defense made a three-hour closing argument in the
gun-possession and bribery trial of Sean "Puffy" Combs on Monday. "The
evidence against Mr. Combs is so weak," insisted his lawyer, Benjamin
Brafman, who argued that witnesses who claimed they'd seen his client with a
gun gave conflicting testimony. Brafman told the jury: "They want you to
conclude [Combs's guilt] on the basis of two pimps from the street, a
deadbeat dad and two people... that gave conflicting stories. [Their]
testimony... has no logic, no merit and does not make sense."

A WILL OF HER OWN: Kathie Lee Gifford - who seduces David Spade in an
episode of Just Shoot Me slated for May sweeps - tells TV Guide Online that
her ultimate dream is to drop in on another NBC sitcom: Will & Grace. "I
think it's hysterically funny," says the star of the E! movie Spinning Out
of Control (premiering Sunday at 9 pm/ET). "I'd love to go on that show.
That would be great fun."

STONE SUIT QUASHED: A Louisiana judge has dismissed the lawsuit brought
against Natural Born Killers director Oliver Stone by the family of a store
clerk paralyzed in a shooting, The Associated Press reports. The suit was
filed after the clerk's assailants, Sarah Edmondson and boyfriend Ben
Darras, claimed they were inspired by the 1994 film, which features Juliette
Lewis and Woody Harrelson as a couple on a crime spree.

OSCAR BRIBE: At the annual Oscar nominees lunch held yesterday in Beverly
Hills, producer Gil Cates announced that there will be a special Producer's
Award for the person who delivers the shortest acceptance speech. "We're
going to give you a beautiful, expensive high-definition television set," he
told the nominees. "If it's a category like Best Picture where there is more
than one winner, we'll give everybody a TV set. I'm serious about this."
Cates went on to say that, "If you have people that you feel you must thank,
make a list. After you've won, we'll take that list and put it right up on
our website, Oscars.com, so everybody can read it. Just don't read it on the
air."

SHORT CUTS: Country crooners Amy Grant and Vince Girl welcomed a baby girl
on Monday. The little filly, whose name has not yet been announced, weighed
in at 7 lbs, 9 oz... Jenny McCarthy is in talks to play a sexy 1960s crime
fighting P.I. in the Fox pilot Honey Vicarro, Variety reports... Also
according to the trade paper, ABC is developing a film about the life of Mae
West to possibly star Dolly Parton... Sunday night ratings for the second
episode of Fox's X-Files spin-off The Lone Gunmen sunk a dismal 35 percent
from last week's premiere.
