Nick

I agree with you about the not-done deal for the removal of the lower limit
in the LVD.

Under a new proposal from the EC Commission, the format, style and content
of this Directive will be updated to align it more closely with those of
other, more recent, New Approach Directives, and thus to make it clearer and
less ambiguous.
Nevertheless, the proposal [COM(2003) 252 Final, of 12 May 2003] clearly
states that the legal and technical requirements of the LVD will not be
changed, and thus - notably - there is no proposal to remove the lower
voltage limit of 50V ac or 75V dc, as was done for electronic equipment
which is subject the Radio & Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive
(99/5/EC).

The proposal used to be found at URL:
http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/en/com/pdf/2003/com2003_0252en01.pdf

but I can't get it to load up today.

I have it saved locally but I had better not try to attach it to this
message as it is 151k file size, but if anyone really can't get at it then
I can send it direct (it might be better to put it on the IEEC Communities
website).

Subject: RE: CE without LVD?

The removal of the lower voltage limits from the definition of the
LVD scope is not yet a 'done deal'. In particular, the official UK
position is that the costs to industry which would result from this
change would outweigh the benefits and so our current position (as of
30 May 2003) is that we oppose the change.
