Subject: OATS Ground Plane Material

Has anyone attempted to imbed an OATS ground screen in asphalt? A new parking
lot is going in near our lab and I have a chance to install an OATS. The
stack-up will be gravel with 3" base asphalt and a 1" asphalt cap. I have
plenty of copper screen and was considering putting it between the asphalt
layers. Another alternative would be to use galvanized hardware cloth. Any
advise?

The last time I built an OATS, I used an asphalt pad and then covered it with
1/4" galvanized hardware cloth. I used a big air-powered stapler to staple the
metal cloth to the asphalt, and then I rolled outdoor carpeting over the
cloth. It worked out fine, although I would have preferred to embed the cloth
in the asphalt the way you described. I was about to give it a try, but the
paving contractor said he thought it was a very bad idea for an outdoor site;
he felt that the cloth would make a bad physical discontinuity in the asphalt,
causing the top layer of asphalt crumble and break away from the base in a
very short time.
