Hi Alex:
Assuming you create a nonstandard ESD test:
- If the test is overly stringent, it may cause unnecessary failures. Are you
willing to damage units/shut the production line down for false failures?
- If the test is too weak, it may not catch true problems with manufacturing
variance.
Latent defects:
I consider all ESD testing to be destructive testing, because it may cause
latent failures waiting to be discovered. If you do production ESD testing,
it may create latent defects that are then shipped to your customers.
Hmmm ... this creates an interesting scenario:
Bill: "Hey John - we're getting units back that look damaged by ESD."
John: "Really? We perform ESD testing in production. I guess I better
increase the production ESD test level to catch units like that."
If you are worried about ESD ruggedness, I'd suggest increasing the test level
during engineering testing. If a failure occurs, redesign the product to
withstand it, and retest at a higher level.

Hi Guys,
Does anyone know of a good "quick and simple" ESD test that I could introduce
at the end of the production line? By "quick and simple" I mean that I do not
want to setup an ESD test site per EN61000-4-2 on the shop floor!
