Of course you CAN, but whether it's a waste of time or not is another matter. It isn't strictly correct to say that standards are 'under' Directives, and it can be quite misleading. If you could be a bit more explicit, it would help a lot: 'Can I test my clay-pipe maker for electrical safety to EN 609999-45 even though it isn't notified under the Low Voltage Directive?' Answer: Yes (IMHO), provided you document why it is more appropriate to use that standard than EN 60204 or any other standard that IS notified under the Directive.
