Hi Jim.

Following on from some information sent to you earlier by our Radiation
Officer, Terry Large, you should take the following into account as well.

'It may be that these magnetrons are sufficiently self-shielded for there
not to be a problem. However, if the devices are not self-shielded then the
appropriate manager at Thales needs to have a good read of the Ionising
Radiations Regulations 1999 plus amendments 2003 and decide whether or not
they need to appoint a Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA).'

While our primary products run at up to 25MeV or so, nevertheless we have
to be squeaky clean down to multiples of kV's, and we take a great deal of
care ensuring so.

Any queries, please come back to me here.

Regards,

Chris Duprés

Am interested in the possibility of adventitious output of X-Radiation from
high voltage sources, in this particular instance, magnetrons operating at
around 8 kV.

Two questions:

1. Does anybody know whether there is a level of x-radiation produced at
these sorts of power levels that could conceivably generate a health hazard
(.e.g, in excess of 7.5 micro Sieverts/hour at about 0.5 m from the source)
????

2. Can anybody identify an appropriate device with which to survey and
accurately measure the output of x-radiation from such sources ????

Many thanks, in anticipation

Jim
