Hi Charles, ANSI C62.41 describes standardized test waveforms to be used for surge testing. In addition, a few chapters at the beginning discuss the origins of surge voltages, and give a summary of surveys done in the U.S. and around the world for surge levels. It also characterizes the differences in surges found at the breaker panel of buildings and other locations downstream. It's interesting reading, in a 'geeky' sort of way.
