Hi John:
First and foremost, you should buy a copy of
IEC TS 62441.
Second, the requirements of TS 62441 are unique;
they are indeed substantially different than UL
94 (although use of V1 or better materials
satisfies TS 62441) and the IEC 60695 series.
The standard specifies two alternatives:
1) Use V1 or better material up to 150 mm above
the supporting surface, or
2) Test the material in situ with a 12 mm needle
flame for a period of 3 minutes. Any flaming
shall not exceed 3 minutes after removal of
the needle flame.
Finally, the standard requires a warning, either
a symbol or text: "To prevent spread of fire,
keep candles or other open flames away from this
product at all times" or equivalent.
These requirements differ from our conventional
anti-fire requirements in that these requirements
are based on external ignition, while our usual
requirements are based on internal ignition.

All,
I’ve been hearing rumblings that UL is considering adding IEC TS 62441 to
clause 4.7.1 (reducing the risk of ignition and spread of flame) of UL 69050-1
for equipment intended to be used in the home. I’m not familiar with the
IEC 62441 standard. Could somebody provide me a quick summary of the test/
requirements? Are the requirements of IEC 62441 are substantially different
>from UL 94/ the IEC 60695 series?
