Hi Tony:

I'm not at all sure, but...

I believe the sound pressure requirements apply to
portable (walk-around listening) devices, not to
shelf-standing devices. With this in mind, read
the standard very carefully to see if this
interpretation fits the words.

Best regards,
Rich

Subject: Sound Pressure Safety (EN 60950) of PC Based Hi-Fi

For Europe, does the Exposure to Excessive Sound Pressure clause,
1.3.Z1 of
EN 60950, 2006 (and various amendments) apply to a small shelf-standing PC
‘media player’ system with a headphone socket? Basically a mini-hifi based
around PC technology with internet & terrestrial radio, CD/DVD playback &
media storage with a touch-screen.

I am treating this as ITE with the extra requirements for ITE with audio
amplifiers.

The headphone output is effectively the headphone output of the PC
sound card.

60950 seems to indicate this clause only applies to ‘pocket’ media
players e.g. Walkman’s, iPods and the like?

        Thanks in advance.

        Regards
        T
