Hi John In the ubuntu environment sudo and your user password is sufficient to gain some root privilege.
Since I do a lot of editing of things owned by root I create a launcher on my desktop. Right click and select create launcher. I name it sudo edit and add "gksudo "gnome-open %u"" (remove the outermost quotes) in the command space under the launcher tab. Now I can search for the file I want to edit in a root owned directory and drag and drop it onto this icon, answer with my root password and I'm in.
