I had my steppers working well with stepconf before I even realized that I had a latency issue. I would fire up axis and it would complain about an issue with the realtime system and I'd "OK" through it and try running some code. I was just cutting air, so I didn't worry too much about it. My system acted just fine except that every 10 seconds or so, the steppers would stutter for a tiny bit and continue (that was my latency). It was hard to even notice unless I was really looking for it. But I run my steppers pretty slow. Now that I've done the SMI thing and latency-test confirms that I'm in good shape, the machine is running the best it ever has. EMC is working much better than either TurboCNC or Mach3. My configuration is somewhat unique. I'm running allegro 3788 based stepper driver chips on a board of my own design. Those drive a set of three steppers on a taig mill. I'm using 8 times microstepping, and due to the fact that they are only about 220 oz-in, I can only run them so fast reliably. I am moving at a max rapid of about 10 in/ min. When cutting (due to my wimpy spindle) I am typically running 1 in/min or slower. So a little glitch was tough to notice. So yes, I've tested it on a real machine, and the air I cut looks very nice... :) Sheldon ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SF.Net email is sponsored by: Check out the new SourceForge.net Marketplace.
