Unless I am missing something, it seems to me that you could mount a
drum shell on a lathe in the normal fashion, automatically probe the
complete surface, have a CAM map your design to this surface and then
have a router on the tool post cut the design. The spindle would need a
high resolution encoder and positioning capability, else, use a
horizontal mill with a rotary table or something similar.
