I am going to guess that since just a monitor change cleared up the
screen problem that the first monitor was having a hard time syncing to
the signals it was getting. If you have:

...
Section "Monitor"
...
        Option      "dpms"
...

in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the new monitor will tell X11 what
resolutions it likes. The first monitor should do the same thing but it
it doesn't always work well. You might try changing the screen
resolution or the frequency settings on the first monitor to see if that
helps. I put a fair amount of effort to get the accurate specifications
for the monitor I have connected and use them in my xorg.conf file.
