At the boot screen, you need to choose the -rtai kernel. You may only
get a few seconds to access the boot screen by hitting escape -- watch
for the prompt.

You can remove the -generic kernel altogether so that the -rtai kernel
is the only option, or you can change the default option to -rtai.
Some general information on doing this in ubuntu is here
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=818177

However, if the problem in support for your LAN chipset is in the linux
kernel driver (it sounds like it is) then you'll see the problem come
back when you choose the -rtai kernel, because it has not been updated
with the same bugfixes as the ubuntu kernel.

PS let us know how the intel atom performs with emc -- it seems intended
for mobile devices, and that is often the kiss of death for RT
performance.
