Jeff, Okay. After giving this some more consideration, now I understand a little better what my options are.
I reinstalled 8.04.1 again to gain the added functionality of the 2.6.24-19-generic kernel. And then I installed EMC2 that uses the 2.6.24-16-rtai kernel. So I boot up -rtai kernel when I want to work on my CNC router application and the -generic kernel for all other work. For now, I'm leaving the LAN disabled and using a wireless USB adapter for my Internet connection. You may only get a few seconds to access the boot screen by hitting escape -- watch for the prompt. You can remove the -generic kernel altogether so that the -rtai kernel is the only option, or you can change the default option to -rtai. Some general information on doing this in ubuntu is here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=818177 However, if the problem in support for your LAN chipset is in the linux kernel driver (it sounds like it is) then you'll see the problem come back when you choose the -rtai kernel, because it has not been updated with the same bugfixes as the ubuntu kernel. Jeff PS let us know how the intel atom performs with emc -- it seems intended for mobile devices, and that is often the kiss of death for RT performance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK & win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100&url=/ _______________________________________________ Emc-users mailing list Emc-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/emc-users ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK & win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100&url=/ _______________________________________________ Emc-users mailing list Emc-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/emc-users
