Are you running EMC from an icon or a shell?  Does it print any messages 
during startup that would hint that it can't find the file, can't open 
it, etc?

I'm away from my Linux machine at the moment, so I can't look to see 
exactly how the file is opened and the data conveyed from user space 
down to the motion controller where it is used.  It sure looks like that 
isn't happening.
