Thank you for your reply really appreciated.  
When I put the floppy disk in - nothing happens, no LED light - no turning
sound. I've read in the Help 'To Mount Media' and as I read it should detect
it automatically but it doesn't. So it says I must mount it manually by
double clicking the Computer icon on the desktop - I do not have a computer
icon on the desktop, or at least I don't seem to be able to see it! Whats it
look like?

I wouldn't sell yourself too short, most people new to Linux wouldn't
know about fstab. I think when you put a floppy in, its directories
should show up in /media/floppy.
