Yeah, maybe so for gently convex surfaces such as that hull.  But unless they 
have repealed the laws of physics, the camera still can't see the fact that 
the object is closer, throwing a portion of the image that could be seen if 
the camera was scanning along with the laser, into the shadows behind the 
object.  Any detail on the sides of the object will be missed.  The scaling 
is software, but you can't scale what you can't see.
