Good Morning (well, it's morning over here anyway).

Just my 2p...

I'm probably in a similar situation to yourself; I'm just starting out with
CNC (and machining) and am looking for a simple solution to begin with that
will allow me to etch circuit boards (got sick of the chemicals, that's why
I'm looking at this), drill ABS project boxes, that sort of thing - I won't be
running anything like the serious kit some people on this list are
running (yet...) And that's some nice kit, too, might I add - that fellow
posting the images of his trike parts was displaying some impressive stuff.

My project involves actually building a machine (frame and electronics) - I
jumped in at the deep end really, I have a habit of that. For the software
I've pretty much made up my mind with EMC2 - once I get into CNC-ing the
simple stuff, I dare say it's a hobby that's just going to grow, so it's good
to know that the software should be able to accommodate my whims. Because
all my bits are going to be custom parts anyway (apart from the steppers), I
need some flexible software - the HAL of EMC2 looks like it will be
particularly useful and stop me having to write my own software driver. To
begin with you will probably get away with just the using the simpler
interfaces, like the stepconf GUI for example, if you're buying off-the-shelf
kit - but I bet you'll be tinkering with the gubbins underneath that once the
CNC bug gets you :)

Regards,

Pete Restall

PS: You've probably already come across cnczone.com, but if you haven't, take
a look there for all sorts of CNC-related stuff to help you get started. You
can get lost in there it's that vast...

Greetings,

I've been lurking here for a few weeks and I'm starting to wonder if I'm
in the right place. I'm looking for a primer to help me understand the
recommended or possible hardware configurations that EMC will run. I will
be using stepper motors. I doubt I'll use much of the power of EMC and am
wondering if the learning curve is too steep to be worth while to gain
access to the small portion of EMC I'll find useful. I am just getting
started with CNC as a hobby.
