A full acre of exhibit space, full of everything from model steam engines to 18 cylinder radials, a circa-1902 steam yacht, 1/2 scale model railroad, etc. Several hundred retired toolmakers bring all sorts of INSANELY detailed models. 2 years ago they had a guy (I think Rene Thierry or thereabouts) that built a 1/3rd scale Ferrari roadster than ran. He made his own TIRES, even! Totally incredible stuff.
Anyway, there is a lot of interest in CNC there, too. Roland Friestad and Ron Ginger and others gave talks on CNC topics. We had a bad experience where some of the board thought we should be paying for vendor tables, and they kind of kicked us out in about 2004. Since then, things have been mostly patched up. But, Roland Friestad set up his absolutely wonderful CNC Workshop in Galesburg, IL, which was drawing a lot of interest, and I didn't even go to NAMES last year, favoring the Workshop. Unfortunately, Roland smacked his head on a beam and had brain hemmoraging, and wasn't able to continue. He is improving, but has been through a hell of a lot with that injury. So, it is not clear yet whether there will be an EMC get together this year, although there is home something will come together at Stuart Stevenson's shop in Wichita this summer. So, I think maybe the loss of Roland's great meeting is part of the resurgence in interest in NAMES. Look up "North American Model Engineering" and you should get to their page with pictures from the last few years. Feel free to DROOL!
