The z-stage is not connected to the original steel tube. There is a massive 60x60 mm stainless steel rod behind it. (another leftover piece of material)

The spindle is very noisy and speedrange is limited. But, I am most concerned about the plastic gears inside. They are not very strong. So far I didn't have any troubles but I am not sure about the lifespan of these gears. I would really like to skip the gears and drive the spindle directly. A new motor which would be a direct replacement is by far the easiest. But this is also an opportunity to improve the spindle. >> Another thing that might be an option is a 3 phase motor with a >> frequency controller. Thanks! But....the first motor weighs 22 kg! And that is another problem. My z-stage stepper won't handle that.
