I've seen the behavior you describe where the program hangs with an hourglass in Axis, but not in that context. In my case, it was caused by a loop in a program that never terminated. Axis was trying to preview the program and it never terminated.
Another symptom was that Axis (or the display) wanted to use the entire CPU and all of memory. I don't know if that provides a clue or not; but I thought it worth mentioning.
