So did I for the first 2 projects I built, one using an RCA 1802 cpu for tape 
machine controlling at a tv station, and 2 years later, on a z80 based pair 
of boards for an FM transmitter remote control.  The 1802 was a piece of 
cake, the z80 was a problem child, buggier than a 10 day old carcass.  The 
assembler helps, but isn't a carved in stone requirement.  A hex monitor is 
sufficient in most cases.
