Good luck on your quest. > AMS sounds like American Mathematical Society, the people who have partly picked up support for Don Knuth's TeX typesetting system. There should be a TeX package for any Linux system in the usual repository. You should be able to get TeX (the typesetter), MetaFont (font generator), a dvi viewer (xdvi) and a PostScript converter (dvips).
