If you want to do rigid tapping then you need a full set of index and
two quadrature lines, otherwise EMC can't tell which direction the
spindle is turning.
In index-only or index+pulses the encoder only ever counts up.
It might be possible to use only the two quadrature channels without
an index, I don't know if EMC2 supports that. You would have to be
very sure of not missing a pulse though.
