And then there are priorities. Being a nice, in the 70's day here in WV, I hied meself off to the rifle range with the pair of 22's in the cabinet, a rimfire, and a 22-250, both in the 40+ year old range but the 22-250 would not be quickly recognized as a Remington 788. New, all walnut laminated thumbhole stock for starters. Pillar bedded, the whole maryann for a 1 ragged hole rifle. The rimfire I wanted to see if it liked the new, improved SuperX ammo as well as it liked the old, but sadly the group at 50 yards with the new was about twice the size of the group from the old. Then, switching to the 22-250, and dialing it onto the paper with a bore sighter, one shot for effect, moved the scope a bit more for the next 4 shots, then fired a 5 shot for record. 3"x4". WTH? Grabbed that box of shells and ran another 5 shot group on a different target, more of the same. Grabbed a different box of shells loaded in new Winchester brass. Headspace short, and that makes the primer look like a 65k cup load, with a 50k cup load in them. Put up fresh targets too. Group was a little better, but nothing like an Ed Shilen barrel should be able to do, which is 10 shots in one ragged hole that might pass a 243 bullet. Switched back to the rimfire & got some more 5/8" groups out of it. That will put squirrel in the skillet. Unforch, the cook I had that could do that _right_ died in '68. Picking up stuff, I retrieved my targets & that was when I noticed that of the last 6 I fired in the 22-250, 4 of them went through the paper sideways. Full stop, its throat is burned out. So now I have two rifles needing fresh barrels, which will be the 5th and 6th barrels I've shot out in the time since about '61 when I built the first one. There may be 1500-2000 rounds on the 22-250 barrel. That is half the life one would expect. Loaded to about 95% of factory speeds like I do, it should have lasted 6000 rounds. -- Cheers, Gene "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
