Ian,

You have settings defined in your .ini file for limit switches on each 
axis but no switches connected - i.e. EMC2 thinks that the switches are 
open circuit which is the default for a triggered switch. Consequently, 
the program won't let you do anything in case you damage the machine.
The solution is to manually edit the .ini file in a text editor (gedit) 
and, in the 'axes' section for each axis, zero the references to HOME_xxxxxx
( but not the LIMIT entries which set the soft limits ). Alternatively, 
create a new setup with EMC2's config wizard for the machine as it 
exists - not as you hope it will be when it is finished...
