My idea was to have enough output at slow speeds that there would be little 
or no abiguity.

Someone else mentioned detents, and that you get with the stepper motors 
for free.  The ones I bought are about 1.24" square and deep, and appear to 
be ball bearing equipt.  ISTR they were about a tenner each from either H&R 
or MPJ at the time.

On paper, as in an EE diploma on the wall, neither am I, but I am self-
educated, having quit school after the 8th grade to go fix these new-fangled 
things called "tv's" in the late 1940's, and I seem to get accused of 
walking on water occasionally by folks who are easily impressed.  I can't 
unless its frozen but the accusation is nice. ;-)  I have since collected a 
GED, and a diploma from the University of Hard Knocks which is only about a 
30 minute drive away.  That, and $2.75 might get you a cup of coffee at 
Starbucks. ;-)
