Other than their slow speeds at 8 cycles per rev, I see no reason why they wouldn't work. I would design around them to give them some support from the knocks and bangs of a working shop, they look ok. Pan has extensive experience with such things as the search and speed dials on the better DVC-PRO vcr's are their own in house made parts. I have several of those from retired machines, and the biggest problem by far is that the 'rubber' bands they put on the 2.5" diameter knobs were some sort of elastomer that dissolves in hand lotions or skin oils, and they are now all covered in a very unpleasant feeling, very sticky substance that is difficult to remove w/o damaging the plastic of the knob from solvents. Alcohol doesn't cut it, acetone does, but also attacks the plastic. I never had to replace one of those assemblies in several years of maintaining about 20 of the machines. The detents wore out after a few million operations, but the encoders kept on working flawlessly. -- Cheers, Gene "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
