Other than their slow speeds at 8 cycles per rev, I see no reason why they 
wouldn't work.  I would design around them to give them some support from 
the knocks and bangs of a working shop, they look ok.

Pan has extensive experience with such things as the search and speed dials 
on the better DVC-PRO vcr's are their own in house made parts.  I have 
several of those from retired machines, and the biggest problem by far is 
that the 'rubber' bands they put on the 2.5" diameter knobs were some sort 
of elastomer that dissolves in hand lotions or skin oils, and they are now 
all covered in a very unpleasant feeling, very sticky substance that is 
difficult to remove w/o damaging the plastic of the knob from solvents.  
Alcohol doesn't cut it, acetone does, but also attacks the plastic.  I          
 
never had to replace one of those assemblies in several years of 
maintaining about 20 of the machines.  The detents wore out after a few 
million operations, but the encoders kept on working flawlessly.
